Special package notes

  1. The following packages had security updates since the 9.1 release: automake, bash, bind-server, bind-utils, cairo, curl, expat, freetype, gd, ghostscript, gnupg, gnutls, graphviz, httpd, inkscape, libexif, libgcrypt, libssh2, libtasn1, libxml, libxslt, ntp, openjpeg, openldap, openssl, perl, php, poppler, postgresql, ruby, samba, socat, subversion, sudo, tcpdump, tiff, unzip, wget, wireshark, yaml. Please upgrade to the latest version of these packages.

  2. The following new packages are available:

    • The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) provides audio and MIDI functionality to the Linux operating system.

    • Cheetah is an open source template engine and code generation tool, written in Python. It can be used standalone or combined with other tools and frameworks. Web development is its principle use, but Cheetah is very flexible and is also being used to generate C++ game code, Java, sql, form emails and even Python code.

    • Coan is a software engineering tool for analysing preprocessor-based configurations of C or C++ source code. Its principal use is to simplify a body of source code by eliminating any parts that are redundant with respect to a specified configuration.

    • dnspython is a DNS toolkit for Python. It supports almost all record types. It can be used for queries, zone transfers, and dynamic updates. It supports TSIG authenticated messages and EDNS0.

dnspython provides both high and low level access to DNS. The high level classes perform queries for data of a given name, type, and class, and return an answer set. The low level classes allow direct manipulation of DNS zones, messages, names, and records.

    • doxypy is an input filter for Doxygen. It reformats python comments to conform to doxygen documentation blocks. This makes it possible to use the Doxygen/Javadoc syntax inside of docstrings when writing code documentation and automatically generate API documentation out of it instead of being forced to use non-python documentation blocks or to document code redundantly.

    • FastJar is an attempt at creating a feature-for-feature copy of Sun's JDK's 'jar' command. Sun's jar (or Blackdown's for that matter) is written entirely in Java which makes it dog slow. Since FastJar is written in C, it can create the same .jar file as Sun's tool in a fraction of the time.

    • FLAC is an Open Source lossless audio codec.

      FLAC is comprised of

      • "libFLAC", a library which implements reference encoders and decoders for native FLAC and Ogg FLAC, and a metadata interface

      • "libFLAC++", a C++ object wrapper library around libFLAC

      • "flac", a command-line program for encoding and decoding files

      • "metaflac", a command-line program for viewing and editing FLAC metadata

      • user and API documentation

    • The library "libotf" provides the following facilites.

      • Read Open Type Layout Tables from OTF file. Currently these tables are supported; head, name, cmap, GDEF, GSUB, and GPOS.

      • Convert a Unicode character sequence to a glyph code sequence by using the above tables.

    • MarkupSafe is a library for Python that implements a unicode string that is aware of HTML escaping rules and can be used to implement automatic string escaping.

    • NetCDF (network Common Data Form) is an interface for array-oriented data access and a library that provides an implementation of the interface. The netCDF library also defines a machine-independent format for representing scientific data. Together, the interface, library, and format support the creation, access, and sharing of scientific data.

    • Nettle is a cryptographic library that is designed to fit easily in more or less any context: In crypto toolkits for object-oriented languages (C++, Python, Pike, ...), in applications like LSH or GNUPG, or even in kernel space.

    • PSGI is an interface between Perl web applications and web servers, and Plack is a Perl module and toolkit that contains PSGI middleware, helpers and adapters to web servers.

    • The pyparsing module is an alternative approach to creating and executing simple grammars, vs. the traditional lex/yacc approach, or the use of regular expressions. The pyparsing module provides a library of classes that client code uses to construct the grammar directly in Python code.

    • qrupdate is a Fortran library for fast updates of QR and Cholesky decompositions.

    • The scons utility builds software (or other files) by determining which component pieces must be rebuilt and executing the necessary commands to rebuild them.

    • The serf library is a C-based HTTP client library built upon the Apache Portable Runtime (APR) library. It multiplexes connections, running the read/write communication asynchronously. Memory copies and transformations are kept to a minimum to provide high performance operation.

    • sudosh is a filter and can be used as a login shell. sudosh takes advantage of PTY devices in order to sit between the user's keyboard and a program, in this case a shell. sudosh was designed specifically to be used in conjunction with sudo or by itself as a login shell. sudosh allows the execution of a root shell with logging. Every command the user types within the root shell is logged as well as the output. The sessions later can be replayed for reviewing purposes.

    • tmux is a terminal multiplexer: it enables a number of terminals to be created, accessed, and controlled from a single screen. tmux may be detached from a screen and continue running in the background, then later reattached.

    • Tokyo Cabinet is a library of routines for managing a database. The database is a simple data file containing records, each is a pair of a key and a value. Every key and value is serial bytes with variable length. Both binary data and character string can be used as a key and a value. There is neither concept of data tables nor data types. Records are organized in hash table, B+ tree, or fixed-length array.

    • Tornado is a Python web framework and asynchronous networking library. By using non-blocking network I/O, Tornado can scale to tens of thousands of open connections, making it ideal for long polling, WebSockets, and other applications that require a long-lived connection to each user.

    • The unixODBC project provides Unix applications with the same ODBC 3.51 API and facilities available under Windows. It provides a Driver Manager that supports the full ODBC API and performs the ODBC 3 to ODBC 2 translations with UNICODE to ANSI conversion. It also includes a set of graphical utilities that allow users to specify connections to DBMSes to be used by applications, a collection of ODBC drivers including a simple text based driver, an NNTP driver, a Postgres driver and others, and a selection of templates and libraries that to aid in the construction of ODBC drivers.

    • Virtuoso is a scalable cross-platform server that combines SQL/RDF/XML Data Management with Web Application Server and Web Services Platform functionality.

    • yaSSL is a C++ based SSL library for embedded and RTOS environments for individuals who prefer to use the C++ language. yaSSL supports the industry standards up to TLS 1.1, and also includes an OpenSSL compatibility interface.

/opt/twwdata10

Prior to this release, additional paths to add to the Perl, Python, Ruby, and Tcl module search path were available through the /opt/TWWfsw/perl/etc/include.paths.d, /opt/TWWfsw/python/etc/include.paths.d, /opt/TWWfsw/ruby/etc/include.paths.d, /opt/TWWfsw/tcl/etc/include.paths.d directories. Modules available through packages such as gettext, glib, or gtk+ were added at package installation by copying a file with the appropriate additional search path to the above paths. However, if the above paths did not exist because Perl, Python, Ruby, or Tcl were not installed, this file was not copied to the appropriate directory. The solution in this release is a directory independent of the Perl, Python, Ruby, and Tcl installation directory, namely, /opt/TWWfsw/twwdata10. The TWWdata10 package, after installation, appears as follows:

  $ find /opt/TWWfsw/twwdata10 | sort
  /opt/TWWfsw/twwdata10
  /opt/TWWfsw/twwdata10/etc
  /opt/TWWfsw/twwdata10/etc/libglib230

  /opt/TWWfsw/twwdata10/etc/tcl85/include.paths.d/64

Packages such as gettext, glib, or gtk+ now depend on TWWtwwdata10 to add additional module search paths to programs such as Perl, Python, Ruby, and Tcl. Because of this, when Perl, Python, Ruby, and Tcl are installed, these additional search paths will be immediately available, avoiding the chicken-and-egg problem before.

Common bin, sbin directories

Prior to this release, symbolic links were created in the common bin and sbin directories to /opt/TWWfsw/package/bin or /opt/TWWfsw/package/sbin. If certain environment variables needed to be set prior to invoking the binary, a binary wrapper was created under /opt/TWWfsw/package/bin or /opt/TWWfsw/package/sbin and the symbolic link would link to this binary wrapper which would then invoke the real binary. However, if more than one version of the package existed, only one link in the common bin directory could exist. There was no easy way to invoke the binary wrapper. To fix this, all links in the common bin directories are now symbolic links to a binary wrapper script with the same name as the real binary. The real binaries have been moved to /opt/TWWfsw/package/bin/.bin and /opt/TWWfsw/package/sbin/.bin. The binary wrappers invoke the real binary in these directories. This change now treats all links in the common bin directories the same and allows executing binaries when multiple versions of the same program exist.

Updates to pkgutils

The following important changes were made to pkgutils.1.6.11:

  • pkg-inst should work better in low-memory situations as the method used to unpack zip archives has changed to use the libarchive library

  • Display progress of unpacking archives similar to the progress displayed when downloading packages

  • Add support for RHEL 7, Solaris 11

  • Added a pkg-mirror tool to mirror packages from a repository for a specific architecture.
